The trail is as beautiful as it is confusing. It has a high vantage point with beautiful views of the La Sal Mountains and Negro Bill Canyon to the east and, from the overlook, the Colorado River. The area is also known for the Slickrock Bike Trail which draws avid bikers from all over the world. The four-wheel-drive and biking trails crisscross several times but never share the same route. Never drive on the biking trail, which is marked with painted white dashed lines. Be very careful at the crossing points. Always be courteous and friendly—it’s contagious. Numerous steep climbs and descents over sandstone domes and ledges. Excellent traction enables vehicles to surmount inclines of incredible steepness but plenty of power is necessary. Make sure your vehicle is properly geared. Several tippy spots will test the leaning ability of most vehicles. It’s important to have excellent front and rear approach angles on your vehicle and good articulation. Not recommended for stock vehicles. Lion’s Back and Potato Salad Hill are obstacles, not trails. Because they are so popular, this book would not be complete without mentioning them. Lion’s Back became famous years ago when a vehicle, having lost its brakes, careened off the side. The driver survived. The event was caught on video tape and was shown on several television programs. Potato Salad Hill draws crowds by the hundreds during the Jeep Safari. Rollovers are common. Pictures don’t capture the steepness of either obstacle. They are both extremely dangerous. Potato Salad Hill is technically more challenging than Lion’s Back but a mistake on Lion’s Back can have more dire consequences.
