In the 1880s, this mountain road over Colockum Pass (5,373 feet) was part of a long and important freight and emigrant route linking The Dalles, Oregon, the Ruby mines and British Columbia, Canada. While I find the climb on the south side only moderately scenic, with a number of logged sites to look beyond, the northward descent offers inspiring vistas of the Columbia River, the North Cascades, and much of central Washington. Easy, although the roadbed is fairly rocky, especially on the north side of the pass.
