Carbon River Road, which parallels its namesake waterway, passes through a rare inland, old-growth temperate rainforest of giant Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and western red cedar. It ends in the least-visited corner of the park, where visitors enjoy a rain-forest campground, and access to Carbon Glacier (which has the lowest-elevation terminus of any glacier in the Lower 48) and the famous 93-mileWonderland loop trail around Mt. Rainier. On a good dirt-and-gravel road. But rainfall is heavier here than elsewhere in the park, and the road can be closed by flooding and washouts. Call ahead before going. Drive slowly on this narrow forest road, and turn on your headlights for safety
